Understanding Auto-Discover and setting up email accounts

| 2017-11-22

Many people new to Outlook and those migrating from an earlier version follow the approach of just entering their email address and password for the email account being configured without understanding the consequences especially for those who want to set up their email account using the POP3 protocol versus IMAP as a for instance.

Letting Outlook configure you email account by just entering your email address and password uses a process referred to as <Auto-Discover>.

What <Auto-Discover> means is that Outlook will select the protocol to be used to configure the email account which for an Outlook.com or hosted Exchange account would default to configuring it as an Exchange account.

For all other accounts, Outlook will automatically default to IMAP to configure the account if the email service provider supports the IMAP protocol (virtually all major providers do). That will lead to unexpected results if the desire is to use POP3 which must be manually configured.

For manual account configuration using Outlook 2016 see How to manually configure an email account in Outlook 2016

For earlier versions of Outlook see How to change/recreate an Outlook Mail Profile
